Under-rated film

Let's Make Love is better than some people give it credit for.
Marilyn's singing "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is a joy to watch;
The cameo appearances with Milton Berle, Gene Kelly and Bing Crosby are very well done; and Marilyn's character is smart, compassionate and realistic.
The film is not without flaws; but Marilyn is always a joy to watch and that's enough for me.

I thought it was really funny!!
It was a fine film except for the drab tone to the movie.
Yves M's character's office with the horrid green table and those gothic chairs, Yeesh!
Look like something out of "Rosemary's baby".

Other than that I thought it was truly laugh out loud funny and of course anything with Marilyn Monroe in it is great to watch because she brings magic to every movie or picture she's in.

Also, now I finally know who Milton B(funny), Tony Randall(he's a good actor), Gene Kelly and Bing Crosby are and what they look like =)

I agree that this film is grossly underrated...I think its quality has always been overshadowed by the turmoil of her personal life at the time, but if you look back at it, it's a very entertaining movie.

I totally agree with the first person to start this topic... "Let's Make Love" is indeed under-rated. Monroe is NOT the "dumb-blonde" she always has been famous for portraying. Instead, she is vibrant, alert and interesting. Her voice in perfect musical form, and co-star Vaughan a true treat and delight. Montand is definitely not as bad as he has been played out to be, but instead marvelous as the devious, and heartless tycoon Clemente.

I agree with everything you said! It was suprisingly a good movie as well as the musical numbers and it did not deserve all the flak from film critics and audiences.

I agree that it is probably underrated...Marilyn's performance (especially song-wise, I think) was very entertaining and the celebrity cameos made for an amusing feature in a fairly amusing story.

True, it isn't without flaws. Admittedly, it's not my very favorite Monroe film.
I find the role of the male lead a bit confusing. In the beginning, it's like they're trying to portray him as a rich, charismatic, famous, handsome, man-about-town kinda guy. Then as soon as he starts going for Marilyn, it's like he becomes this little antisocial dweeb who isn't talented in any way imaginable. A bit confusing.
I think the POINT is, he was a kind of nerdy and insecure man who was just conveniently cloaked behind his fortune. He never WAS that talented or social - it's just that his MONEY made him APPEAR that way, and when we see him in a scenario where his wealth cannot help him, we begin to see his limits. I guess that's what they were going for.

Still. It was just a little confusing. At the beginning he seemed like a playboy. Later on he was almost like a virgin. Generally I found his performance kind of strange and off-beat. That's no insult to Yves Montand however. A great actor, I am sure.
In addition I would have liked seeing more exposure for Tony Randall. If I recall, he did have one drunk scene, but I still felt like that wasn't enough. It's like the only Tony Randall movie I've seen where I could kind of forget he was in it. Randall was one of the most captivating actors on screen at the time, and if his performance was less memorable in one film, I question the writing. =)

But all that said. I agree. Underrated. A very fun watch. I am glad that I own it and I am sure that I'll view it from time to time. A pretty fun story, with some performances that really make it worthwhile.

Well I'd say that even YOUR post is underestimating the film a tinsy bit. So go figure.

Let's Make Love is one of the best comedies of all times (not just the "romantic" ones). The script is as witty and sweet as hell (just think about how the movie starts, referring to Clement's ancestry) and by all means extremely funny, amusing, entertaining etc etc (...not "hardy-har-har-har" funny, as Berle would have said :p).
Some might think that I'm some old geezer that just can't let the past go, but I'm simply at my late 30ies and oddly enough I never saw this film while I was a teen so that it could be understandable that it just brings back memories : I 1st saw this half a dozen years ago without having even heard of it before and I was completely dumbfounded.

I only today found out that it was looked down upon by critics and viewers PLUS imdb subscribers and I was like "wtf".
Dunno what made them un-tick considering it (somebody said it was the illegitimate affair the starring couple was involved in by the time), yet I see no reason why it should. So yes, this is HUGELY under-rated.

I think so too, Contradad-1.
All things considered, it is underrated, even compared to some of MM'smovies.

I don't think it's underrated. It's not a terrible film but it's probably the worst of Marilyn's 1953-1961 movies. Marilyn is always worth watching and I'm glad the movie exists but it is frankly dull in many spots, it's definitely my least favorite Marilyn film of all her starring roles and that includes the two early starrers which IMO are indeed underrated: LADIES OF THE CHORUS (1949) and DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK (1952).

'Misfits' is available via streaming at Amazon Instant Video. Free to watch for Prime members, too, I think.
