Box Office Returns

How did Let's Make Love perform at the box office?

reply

According to the "Marilyn Encyclopedia" by Adam Victor, Let's Make Love made
$3 million at the box office (a pretty hefty sum in 1960)
This is TWICE as much money as "The Prince and the Showgirl" made, and more money than Marilyn's first hit "Niagara" made (2.5 million)

Critics didn't like it? Or comparing to Some like it hot it was a modest success?

reply

Critics did not like it but it was
a success according to the cinema goers.
To me its better than the "Misfits",
although i love the "Misfits",
cause 4 of my favourite actors is in it.
MARYLIN MONROE/CLARK GABLE/MONTGOMERY CLIFT
AND ELI WALLACH.

That would be today's estimates. There is no way it made that much in 1960, if it had, it would have been considered the biggest hit of all time back then. It made around 3 million, good, but a little less than some of her bigger hits.

The film made $44,840,000 at the USA box office.

Adjusted for inflation, that is $360,513,487 by today's standards. It's her highest grossing film of all time.

reply

Jeez, people, look it up on the IMDb's page for Box Office/Business. It made $3 million back then, which as others have correctly said, it is around $44 million today. That puts it in the league of "sleeper" movies--hardly box-office success, but profitable nonetheless. Considering the star-power involved, that probably was a disappointing return.

reply

Whatever it made, it was not considered a success. "The Misfits" took in almost $4 million, but it cost a little over $4million to shoot (very high sum for a black and white movie back then) So nobody got rich off that one. This is the reason MM was so stressed out about "Something's Got To Give"---one more flop and she was kaput. (And every magazine cruely reminded her of it, during 1961-62. That, and her age.)

reply

Everything I've read on Marilyn has always listed this film as a flop.

___It did do alright at the box office, but it's the cost of production versus the box office recipts. They, FOX were in serious trouble and wanted another HOT, which is considered one of the greatest films of all time. Pretty hard to strike gold twice, especially with that script. So, for just about any other star, it was not a failure, just not a Marilyn success. She was held to a separate scale than most female stars.
