what ever happened to third officer osborne

after mr walsh mr osborne was a great character what happened to george furness

When Woody Strode persuaded Edmond O'Brien (Walsh) to come back to the cabin where Dorothy Malone was trapped, Mr. Osborne yelled "I'm lowering away!", got into a lifeboat and, well, lowered away. He and the other officers escaped.

Update 9/23/09: As pointed out in the following post by donofthedial, I erred above: Osborne got off the lifeboat before it pulled away from the ship after the ship's funnel collapsed onto the bridge. Osborne went back because the captain and the other officer, Ragland, were on the bridge. The captain is killed but Ragland is unhurt and he and Osborne appear at the very end of the film, escaping from the ship with the others. End Update.

The real George Furness can be seen in a handful of Japanese-made movies such as the sci-fi epics THE MYSTERIANS and GORATH, as well as in US films shot in or around Japan, such as MY GEISHA and this movie. He was a British lawyer who came to Japan after World War II to act as an attorney for some Japanese officials tried for war crimes. The IMDb site for him has little information beyond that. He was born in 1898 and made his last film appearance in 1962, but they have no date of death for him, or what he did after the early 60s. He was not a professional actor, just a resident westerner hired to play westerners in Japanese films, a common practice in the Japanese film industry of the day, when western actors were almost unobtainable.

No, there's more.

As the life boat is being lowered, Mr. Osborne gets out and climbs back onto the ship when he realizes that the captain and another officer were in the wheel house when the smokestack collapsed on it.

As the ship is sinking, you can see and hear Mr, Osbourne telling the principle characters to head for the stern of the ship.

Yes, you're correct. I had reversed the sequence of events in my memory. Osborne and Ragland (who was with the captain when the stack fell) meet up with Walsh and the rest as they race onto the deck as the ship goes down. What's interesting is that, along with Walsh (as you and others note on the thread about what happened to him), you never get much glimpse of any of the officers after they swim away from the ship. They all seem to get pulled into a lifeboat and survive, but there's almost no shots of any of them making it, with the camera focused on Stack, Malone and Strode. Odd.

I have updated my post above with corrected information. Thank you.

Osborne is indeed swimming out to safety with Stack, Malone, Strode etc. but I think since this final part was shot off the CA coast, they were using a double for George Furness because I doubt he traveled back from Japan where he was based to do that scene.
