Narrated by … ?

Do I detect John Houseman narrating this splendid effort?

reply

No, you detect the voice of George Furness, who plays Third Officer Osborne.

And he was perfect to do the narration, I watched the movie for the first time in years. It was just as riveting as it was the first time I had seen it.

The narrator sounded a lot like actor John McGiver to me.I was surprised it wasn't him.

Funny how, with the actual narrator (George Furness) acting in the movie, with lots of dialogue and such a distinctive voice, so many people fail to recognize him as the narrator. I thought he was excellent as, and the logical choice for, the narrator.

He sounded like he was constipated.

Oh, c'mon! We waited seven years for a reply and this is what we got?!

Actually George Furness, the narrator-slash-First Officer Osborne, was a British lawyer who went to Japan after the war to serve as a defense counsel for Japanese officials accused of war crimes. Afterwards he stayed in the country and occasionally made appearances in Japanese movies that needed western characters, which was a sideline for a number of Americans and Europeans living in Japan at that time. (Furness was in The Mysterians, for one.) Since The Last Voyage was filmed in the Sea of Japan (accounting for the large number of Japanese extras), Furness was a logical choice for the role.

Thx, I figured this unusual performance must have a back-story to it. He did well, but obviously not a seasoned actor ... which is actually perfect for a project like this. The whole movie crashes through the fourth wall.
