watched the movie on the second run dvd today. unfortunately the aspect ratio is 1.77:1, second run stated that there is no other source master of this movie. thats very disturbing, especially in the beginning of the movie - a lot of faces of characters who are speaking are cut somewhere right over the chest and the power of some great sequences is diminished. its a shame, i mean this movie is barely fifty years old and its arguable the best piece of this genre.
ive heard that second run had the some problems with "passenger" from munk, its really a pity and therefore criterion is probably a good idea, cause i dont want to believe that there are no source masters with the original aspect ratio left.
corr. it is not as bad as i first thought. some twenty minutes ago i realized that i have a huge overscan problem with my tv. on the pc-monitor pictures were not as bad as i described. though its not the original aspect ratio, and thats kind of sad.
Both the UK DVD and the Polish DVD are in that awful 1:77.1 Release, which looks like the Cropped Pan&Scan verson cropped even further to make it 16:9.
It's sad.
The Polish DVD looks so expensive with it's rich cover, etc. and High price tag. But the picture quality is awful. It seems we'll never see this film the intended way.
The UK DVD is probably the same as the Polish DVD because the Polish DVD did include English subs, so the British probably used the same Master of the Polish DVD.
