Film for or about children

I'm bewitched by this beautiful and concise piece of cinema. It occasionally evokes The Red Balloon for me. Yet the French film seems designed to be enjoyed by both children and adults, whereas this one is more likely to be over the head of most children. The use of cinematic images/metaphors and musical motifs is certainly a conscious choice of Tarkovsky's and aimed at adults, I think. Any opinions?
