Is anyone confused about the bandits?

I thought they were playing some kind of game, coming into Karin's house after murdering her. The way they reacted to that guy saying stuffs and the mother stumbling upon their bag (containing her clothes) I thought for sure these guys must have been planning something. But no later on it was realized that they didn't know jack.

I was actually surprised by that, because Karin previously told them the direction to her house, either they were too dumb or the story was flawed.

One of my least fave Bergman movies so far.

Most criminals aren't known for being terribly smart. Plus they made their way there in the dark.

I've only seen 4 of his films so far, and while this wasn't nearly as good as Seventh Seal or Wild Strawberries (both of which were incredible), it was still a good film IMO.

I completely agree, when the mother picks up the bag near the doorway, the tension was palpable. I wonder what Bergman had in mind with this scene when later it's revealed the bandits had no idea they were the parents. unless.. they did know, and they underestimated their kindness for weakness, and tried to sell their daughter's clothes to them as a mindgame?
