Van der Poel name tags

Why were J Mills and H Andrews so keen to remove Van der Poel's name tags when they are handing him over to the military police in the bar? He's already come out to them as German so why would it matter if he had those fake tags on or not? Presumably he'd tell the MP's the truth about his identity.

reply

Because Van der Poel is a Dutch name not a German name. It would be a dead giveaway.

reply

I see, so it was only J Mills and Co. who needed to know of his fake identity. My point was, he was under arrest anyway so why did it matter? Anyway, thanks for answering.

reply

Because they were fake dog tags, he was wearing South African dog tags as part of his cover as a South African officer, and would therefore give away the fact that he was a spy and blow the cover that Anson had provided for him, which would ultimately lead to him being executed.

reply

Because it showed that he had pretended to be a south African. That makes him a spy and liable to be shot, rather than just a POW.

reply

Thanks to you and Jonesey, that makes it clearer. Have a nice cool Carlsberg!
