WHERE IS THE HOUSE SUPPOSED TO BE LOCATED?

IF PHILIP WINTHROP RODE ALL THE WAY FROM BOSTON MASSACHUESETTES ON HORSEBACK?WHERE WAS THE HOUSE IN THEORY SUPPOSED TO BE LOCATED?EVEN THOUGH IT IS A FICTIONAL STORY.

reply

Roderick said that the house is in New England. I don't think it is stated in the short story, so that's probably as specific as you're going to get.

reply

Maybe it was on the moon- and the horse had rockets attached to its tail.

Now as whereabouts of the fictional house have been discussed, what's the location of the filmed house? Imdb info doesn't say this precisely.

reply

The exterior of the house, I believe, was a set built on a stage at Raleigh Studios (Producers Studio at the time of filming).

In the British 1960's tv adaptation

It is set in England NOT New England.

Weren't you paying attention? The house is at the bottom of the cold, dank tarn. That's where 'tis.

The original house was Manor House School, Stoke Newington, London. Now demolished.
There is a picture of it at http://www.eapoe.org/papers/misc1921/tplgia04.jpg

The house used in the film was probably all sets. Notice how there's only I think two shots of the house's exterior, and we don't really see the landscape around the house aside from mist and weeds. Someone else already posted the name of a studio, which sounds about right.

As for the fictional House of Usher, I don't recall the short story ever mentioning where. In the film Roderick Usher repeatedly mentions New England, which doesn't really narrow it down. However, Philip riding all the way on horseback from Boston doesn't really mean anything since he could've stopped at any number of cities on the way to the House. In fact, Philip even tells Madeline that "you can ride with me. Later we'll get a coach to Boston," meaning that somewhere between Boston and the House of Usher is a town big enough to provide transportation services.

Someone else mentioned the House of Usher could be located in Arkham, from Lovecraft's Cthulhu universe. This would be kind of interesting since Vincent Price's other film "The Haunted Palace" is based off of a Lovecraft book, even though it's usually regarded as a part of the Price-Poe series of films.

Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.

Although it's location is never made explicit, Poe's inspiration for the story may be based upon events of the Hezekiah Usher House, which was located on the Usher estate that is now a three-block area bounded in modern Boston by Tremont Street to the northwest, Washington Street to the southeast, Avery Street to the south and Winter Street to the north. Here's a map showing the intersection of Tremont and Washington:

The house was constructed in 1684 and either torn down or relocated in 1830. Other information tells that a sailor and the young wife of the older owner were caught and entombed in their trysting spot by her husband. When the Usher House was torn down in 1830, two bodies were found embraced in a cavity in the cellar.
