Swamp gas

What was the significance of the swamp gas? The makers of the movie made a big deal about emphasizing this early on, and I kept expecting it to factor in the plot somehow, but it never did. I'm wondering why Minelli even chose to include this in the movie at all?

Think of what a swamp is----a low wet area---anything dead and underwater is going to decay, hence methane, hence swamp has, big enough concentration, well go ahead and light a cig. could cause you to pass out, could kill you

They are talking about a wildlife preserve in southeast Texas called The Big Thicket. It is 3,500,000 sq. miles of dense forest. Reports of paranormal activity are explained as being caused by swamp gas. In the beginning Rafe tells Theron "no man who goes in there ever comes out". Or something close to that. He is pointing to the swamp gas in the distance. It's possible that a person could get lost in there and never emerge.
I think that's where Theron disappeared in the end.
