Surprised there was no love interest

I'm surprised there was no love interest in this movie. I didn't know Guy Gabaldon's life story. So when Sheila came into the movie in the beginning I thought Guy would fall for her. That's not exactly what happened. They had a pretty hot scene on the floor. But Sheila was there for one purpose only, for Guy to be with a woman before going off to war.
