a little gem

I have read the wonderful reviews and have little to add except it seems many of us loved this under rated little gem when we were young. Like others it stayed in my mind for ever. Perhaps it needs to be rediscovered.

I completely concur...it is in the hazy mist of childhood memory that I first saw this film at age 8 or 9 at the long-departed local movie theatre. I can distinctly recall the boy and girl, each fearful of the rituals of the other's faith, but in time seeing past those surface differences. How they ventured out to see the world, to put behind those who would only keep them apart, setting sail on a small river, and encountering tragedy all too soon. I have forgotten the ending, and like others here hope this film can be relocated and made available while it could still have an impact in the lives of my children.

I saw it long ago on TV on the Saturday Childrens Film Festival. In the film, you are led to believe Rachel has drowned. I think at the end, she is alive.

reply

Yes. Rachael survived, but I didn't get my dingy back, or the hat I brought from old Pritchard.

Glad you liked the film.

Hello, Philip! I've never forgotton you and Loretta Parry in this film, which I saw on the CBS Children's Film Festival in the 60s. I remember your wonderful scenes in the church and in the synagogue, and your outrage when when misinformed about her heritage. And of course, the terrifying dingy ride! I hope you have some lovely memories of your childhood in films; you've certainly given many filmgoers some very cherished memories indeed. All the very best to you. kat

WOW - both "Michael" and "Rachel" have posted here!! That's cool - I hope you two can get together sometime. I suspect a lot of people remember this little film - here's hoping there will be a DVD release and you two can provide the commentary!

Don't be stupid, of course he isn't Philip Needs.

I loved this film when growing up even though I thought parts of it were scary. But I was just a lad and would love to see it again. Unfortunately my cable provider doesn't provide TBN. Good to see Michael and Rachel are still alive though.
