Wonderful Herrmann score.....

Regardless of whether you think the film is dated and silly, I think
Herrmann's score was a marvelous achievment....practically his "Nutcracker
Suite", with delightful themes for almost every character and event.

Re: The Nutcracker
Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. To me, it's Herrmann's gift to the child in all of us.

Totally loved the Herrmann score but I didn't find the film "silly" and certainly not "dated" in fact while watching it I marveled at how they did not try to put a 1960's sensibility into the story and kept it "classic" and traditional unlike most post-1990 films on legendary stories. Those are the ones with their "modern" rewrites, latterday "knowing" sarcasm, and overall revisionism that will surely be dated to later generations.

I liked the music. I didn't recognise it as Hermann. The score doesn't seem to have any of his usual trademarks. But it is expertly done for the film.

Hermann was a brilliant composer, famous for his music for Harryhausen films as well as Hitchcock films. Something that I noticed right away in this one is the "small, delicate" music associated with the Lilliputians and the "big, massive, grave" sound associated with the Brobdingnabians.

I have it on right now, and it really is wonderful music. Highly original, thematic and original.
