Theme Music Lyrics

Does anyone have access to the complete lyrics of the theme sung at the beginning of the film---"Gallant Hours Theme," music and lyrics by the actor Ward Costello (who also acts in the film as Halsey's chief of staff, Captain Harry Black)?

reply

I would suggest Itunes.com (or a similar music network). In addition, the lyrics are from on old sailing song. It was performed by the U.S. Navy Academy Glee Club, so I would imagine it's available.
By the way, do you know where I can get a copy of that movie? Mine was destroyed in a fire. It's perhaps one of the best war movies ever made.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea of the origins of the music, except from the film's credits. I'll keep looking.

I agree with your assessment of the movie. As to a copy of Gallant Hours: The film is available "new and used" on Amazon from private sellers, but only on VHS. Prices range from $20 to $100 (yikes!) There is also available for $20 a DVD, which I unfortunately bought, and I don't recommend it. A poor transfer from tape, sound bad, skips, etc. For the time being I'll stick with a VHS recording I made fifteen years ago from a local TV broadcast, complete with commercials for used car dealers and waterbed merchants.

Amazon does carry a link for you to be informed when a commercial grade transfer DVD is produced, whenever that may be. I wouldn't hold my breath.

The film is now available on a burn on demand DVD through Amazon' I bought it, and am very pleased with the quality. Finally!

reply

Hi, jamesashford. I bought the same burn-on-demand DVD and, like you, found its quality excellent. I waited a long time for this DVD, as I have the fondest memory of my WWII veteran Dad taking the child me to see 'The Gallant Hours' on its original theatrical release, and because the movie is a splendid tribute to a great American sailor and to those whom he commanded.

reply

Actually the leading credits state
Music Composed and Conducted By Roger Wagner
and Sung by the Roger Wagner Chorale

reply

But, there's also a credit that reads "The Gallant Hours Theme" words and music by Ward Costello. This appears later than the Roger Wagner credit.
