I too loved this movie, the ending in particular. it was poignant without being at all overboard and I really enjoyed it!!

A very enjoyable film, albeit a tad overlong.

Joanne Woodward seldom got the opportunity to look as stunning as she did in this one!

reply

You got that right. She was lovely in this film.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ALL OF YOU!

BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES IN THIS FILM - AND, ALTHOUGH A TAD LONG, IT'S A VERY WELL-DONE FILM - MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE SEEN IT TWICE, RECORDED IT TO DVD WHEN IT CAME ON FOX LAST WEEK.

I thought From the Terrace was also a great movie. I catch it on AMC alot. The only part that really threw me off in the movie was the beginning with his parents. It just seemed totally off from the rest of the movie with me. I have alot of answers to what his parents had to do with the rest of the movie, but I just don't know what to pick lol. But besides that, I thought it was a good movie. Not my favorite by Paul, but definitely worth watching.

It was as good as it could get, for all of the editing that was necessary due to sheer length of John O'Hara's original epic. I've personally known relatives and friends of O'Hara. Natalie was based on John's long-lost first love (actually, named Gladys). The real-life Natalie was the daughter of a mine superintendent in Frackville, PA. I've never come across any book that better describes all that an intelligent and passionate woman can bring to a relationship, and it was also a fair representation of the region where "Natalie" grew up. Given about 10 hours of length, the movie could do the book true justice... but moviegoers in its time wouldn't sit still that long any more than modern viewers would.

I saw From the Terrace a year or so ago. Some of the melodramas of the '50s and '60s have been hit or miss with me. This was surprisingly good. Joanne Woodward's performance was especially great. The film is a little long, but I liked it.

I sat through it and was not that impressed. I loved Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and Hud but this was not up to snuff for me...Joanne Woodward was surprisingly lovely but her 'gray' hair colour plus those dark eyebrows were a definite distratcion...the whole movie seemed over dramatized and Myrna Loy was terrible...i cringed at her scenes...also it was too long....but I can now say I did see From The Terrace....

Watched it for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. I've read a few people who feel there was something missing in this film and they couldn't place what was wrong.

I think I figured it out.

Paul Newman does not belong in a suit!! He just seems so out of place in a board room. He can be a great prisoner, criminal, con-man, lumberjack, deadbeat, drunk or athlete, but not a businessman!

Joanne Woodward was just stunning in this film, I even found the "grey" hair oddly appealing. I loved her character in The Long, Hot Summer but her hair was so unattractive and severe!

I'm making my way through Newman's movies, really enjoying myself.

Folks, Mary's hair wasn't grey; it was "platinum blonde," which was a hot trend in the 1950s and 1960s; see "Grace Kelly".

From the Terrace treats with soapy seriousness what The Apartment released the same year treated sardonically. Some of the acting is cringe worthy, particularly Myrna Loy, and when Newman and Ina Balin appear together they seem to be reciting blank verse, and the set and costume design is a study in monochrome, and Mark Robson's direction is belabored. The result is tranquil trash. Room at the Top released the previous year is so much more adult, believable and memorable. Newman never gave a good performance until HUD(63).

reply

I disagree. "Somebody Up There Likes Me" and "The Hustler" for starters.

reply

To me, most of Newman's performances consist of a smirk, a shame-faced grin and a Pepsodent smile. In From the Terrace, Paris Blues, Rally Round the Flag Boys, Sweet Bird of Youth, Harper, Butch Cassidy, and The Sting, he's unexciting and unvaried when not downright wooden. In The Hustler and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof he's got better material and he's a little better than usual, but he's unconvincing (and miscast) in Somebody Up there Likes Me. Hud and The Long Hot Summer(both directed by Martin Ritt) make good use of Newman as does Cool Hand Luke. My favorite Newman performance is in Slapshot.

This movie is very boring. No I don't like movie with explosions I'n it. I like Paul Newman, but Joanna did better job of acting I'n this. He has one expression through the movie, and than at the end he smiles. I tried watching this couple times. When I finished it I did not like it.

Room At The Top is much better. The ending is better to.

reply

The film may be boring to you but it is not boring for many others. There is more to this movie than Paul Newman's performance.

By the way, to, two and too are three separate words with different meanings and uses.

reply

I'm sure there are people who agree with me. Its very boring for a lot of reasons. Not just Paul Newmans performance. He is the lead. Of course if his performance is bad it's not going to help the movie. There are similar movies that are made a lot better.

reply

Of course some people will agree with you. That doesn't prove anything. Boredom is a bit like an argument. There are two sides to it and two parties involved which is why I don't find the film at all boring and you do.

Lol

Average at best. Newman wasn't at his best here, but he was more than serviceable. Joanne's performance, on the other hand, is actually very good and easily the strongest in the film. Ina Balin, though, has her moments and is also incredibly beautiful. In addition, one thing I really like about the film, is how exquisite-looking it is. But ultimately, the whole thing is one big cliche melodrama that drags quite a bit.
