last half of the movie

This movie really became interesting when Ina Balin appeared in it. Newman and Balin had some very good scenes together. How ironic it would have been if they were friendly with each other off the set also. I am not sure how Ina Balin did not become a huge star. She had acting talent and Sophia Loren looks.

You DO know Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were already a couple when this movie was made, right? ;-)

Check out "Winning" for another movie with Joanne Woodward as the unfaithful wife of Paul Newman. Poor guy just couldn't keep his women happy...

Yes I know they were already a couple. That's why I said it would be ironic if Newman was with Balin off the set also, just like in the movie. Yes Winning is a good one.

reply

Ironic, maybe - but also extremely hypocritical as Newman always denied ANY involvement with other women after he married Joanne - "why go out for hamburger when I have steak at home".

The rumor (where there's smoke, there's fire) has long been that the Newmans privately went their separate ways, and the real love of Paul's life was Robert Redford.

"Rumors" don't even count as smoke...

Redford was NOT with Newman when he died - his wife and children and grandchildren were. And in Westport CT. where Paul and Joanne lived together right up until his death. Where did Redford live?

So much for this supposed "true love."

Paul Newman’s lasting impact in Hollywood was more than evident Saturday, a day after the Oscar winner succumbed to cancer, as stars and pals alike expressed their sadness over his death.

"There is a point where feelings go beyond words," two-time costar Robert Redford said in a statement. "I have lost a real friend. My life – and this country – is better for his being in it."

Yes - they were great friends. Men can be friends without any kind of sexual attractiveness at all.

Newman was scheduled to make his professional stage directing debut with the Westport Country Playhouse's 2008 production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, but he stepped down on May 23, 2008, citing health issues.[66]

In June 2008, it was widely reported that Newman had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was receiving treatment at Sloan-Kettering hospital in New York City.[67] Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered in the 1980s with Newman to start Newman's Own, told the Associated Press that Newman told him about the disease about eighteen months prior to the interview.[68] Newman's spokesman told the press that the star was "doing nicely", but neither confirmed nor denied that he had cancer.[69]

Newman died on the morning of September 26, 2008, aged 83, surrounded by family and friends.[70][71][72] He was survived by his five daughters and by eight grandchildren.[73] His remains were cremated after a private funeral service near his home in Westport.

Many thanks for your citations from two of the world's most reliable sources, People magazine and Wikipedia. Rumor is a far better source for truth than either of those two venues.

And your theory as to why Joanne Woodward would have put up with a sexless marriage with Paul Newman for almost 50 years is... ?
