Barbara Steele getting axed

I read about the whole thing from Don Siegel's point of view. One of the reasons they replaced Barbara Steele with Barbara Eden was because Siegel said Miss Steele towered over Elvis. She was 5 foot 8 and Elvis was 5 foot 11. I don't see how she could've towered over him. Even with heals on. Even if that was the case, she could've wore flat shoes. Siegel also mentioned Miss Steele having dark hair. That seems like another lame excuse. Anyway, I think there's more to the story. There usually is. Too bad they didn't save the scenes she filmed. I would've been curious to see them. I do feel she was miscast. But those were lame reasons. Barbara Eden was good. Personally, I think Donna Douglas would've been good. But Barbara Eden was fine.

His primary reasons seemed to be her lack of acting chops and her woeful accent. IMO Barbara Steele was gorgeous - especially in 1960 - but could only play imperious. I think Barbara Eden had the warmth they were seaking. Steele never did warmth. Have you read this account? http://www.elvis-history-blog.com/don-siegel.html

Elvis was 6' tall actually so no idea how she could've towered over him. Also Elvis dated Linda Thompson who was 5'9" and Ginger Alden who was 5'10" and plenty of pics of him visibly taller than them.
