Eva Marie Saint's fashions
This story is taking place 1946-47 but the dresses and hairstyles worn by Eva Marie Saint are certainly not even close to how women were dressing at that time. I mean, she looked fabulous and very cool (literally) in those sleeveless tunic type dresses, but that was not how women looked in the late-40s. In fact, she looked way better than most actresses even looked in 1960. Her hair and dresses were so natural looking, unlike what I recall from that time period (i.e., Hairspray) with teased up hair and very dated frocks. Someone could easily wear that same look today and not appear the least bit dated.
I this is just another one of those films that didn't always adopt the fashions of the time period in which they were set. Take "Ship of Fools" for example, set in 1933. The fashions and hairstyles are clearly from the time period from when it was filmed in the mid-60s.
