How about a DVD?

It would be nice to see a DVD of this, to replace the smudgy-looking EP mode VHS tape from Paramount...especially if it were the full cut of the film. The U.S. print is missing about 7 minutes of footage.

omg i know!! I really cant get this movie anywhere until if gets a DVD release, and i am dying to see it. I think hollywood has just forgotten about this film, but i think somebody should write a letter of reccomendation for it to be transferred...it would be great if they did!!

A DVD release of the European version would be very welcome. Not only is it 12 minutes longer than the U.S. version, it's presentation of the story is quite different. The tale of Carmilla, Georgia and Leopoldo is told by Dr Verari (should'nt that be Valeri?) to a small group of friends on board the Caravelle aircraft, not by Millarca's over dubbed voice. There is a longer and more detailed introduction of the main characters. Jean Prodromides beautiful score is used far more sparingly and subtley. In every way, the European version is better.

I agree. I saw this beautiful movie in Germany in the 1960's. I believe it was in an Army movie theater on Post, either in Berlin or in Darmstadt. I can't remember today whether it was a European version with English sub-titles or whether it was the American version. Annette Vadim and Elsa Martinelli were simply beautiful. I instantly fell in love with Annette. Themes from the musical score have stayed in my memory for years, but I have never been able to find a cassette or a CD anywhere with the music. What a shame to keep this classic in the background as it has been.

The only way I have seen the Jean Prodromides score to "Blood And Roses" on disc is on a 5 track vinyl EP issued in the '60s by the French Phillips/Fontana company. The same company issued many film scores this way.
The record turns up on French eBay from time to time under the title "Et Mourir de Plaisir". Of course, you would need a record player or friend who can transfer it to cassette for you. A word of advice, if you find a copy and decide to bid for it - make sure the disc is in excellent condition or better. Those French EPs are recorded at low volume and surface noise tends to be noticeable if the disc is worn. Good hunting!

Someone (from Japan) on YouTube has recorded his EP of ET MOURIR DE PLAISIR in a videoclip.
Go to YouTube and search for 'Et mourir de plaisir'.

They screened a color print of this last Saturday at the Egyptian in Hollywood.
It was a really choppy print unfortunately. But still very worth it. Interesting they played around with superimposing color on B&W during Georgia's dream sequence.

I was blown away by how good it is. And even more blown away by the score. I think we can all agree a DVD should have both US & European cuts, and a seperate score only track. All in all though, A truly remarkable film!

Yeah, I just watched this movie as part of a horror film festival at the Castro Theater in San Fransisco. I instantly fell in love with everything about this movie and it seemed like everyone else in the theater did as well. The guest of honor at the festival was Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling, we all know who he is)
and he brought an original reel of this (I'm guessing the US version) because he knew that not many people have seen it (as opposed to all of his movies) and also because it is one of his favorite movies. He said that it had a huge impact on his desire to become a director. It was so good, and it is really strange that this movie isn't on DVD yet. It reminded me a lot of Val Lewton's "The Cat People", which is also a great movie. I wonder if Joe Dante could convince important people in hollywood to get it transferred. . . if he can he should, at least so that it won't be forgotten forever one day soon.
P.S.
the film festival is awesome, tonight I also saw
The Howling
Reanimator (one of my personal favorites)
and I'm planning to go see
Blackula
Sugar Hill
The Sentinel
Rosemary's Baby
which are all tomorrow
They also showed
Killer Klowns from Outerspace
Gremlins 2
Matinee
Frankenstein Must be Destroyed
Dracula has Risen from the Gave
It's been a wonderful weekend.

Yes, Paramount needs to wake up and release this classic! The only home video release was a poor-quality VHS tape released by Paramount/Gateway, recorded in the lousy SLP (6 hour speed) mode. Reportedly, Paramount Classics Division (theatrical) has a very good 35 mm widescreen print of this film, which could be used to strike a DVD. Their print would undoubtedly be the shorter US version, but we really need it in letterbox format on DVD.

reply

Really want to see this film.

Lets have a release now!

reply

I would like to see this film too.

It's time for Paramount to start making a more aggressive stance on releasing classic films.

reply

If Paramount can't give us a DVD of the American version, I wonder if another company could release the European cut? (Criterian, are you listening?)

reply

The time has come for either Criterion or Legend to lease this title from Paramount. Many experts in the field, such as Tim Lucas (Video Watchdog), Glenn "DVD Savant" Erickson, and Doug "DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter" Pratt, have requested its DVD release. This remains one of the most elusive genre titles, but Paramount did release the VHS version, so the film is not "lost."

I wound up buying a used VHS for $3 or $4.00 from someone on Amazon. I have a DVD Recording deck as well and played from my VHS player into that & made my own DVD. It's as flawed as it gets. But I have it at least.

Coincidently as another person mentioned Joe Dante also set up the screening I saw of it last year, just a few months before the one that person mentioned.

Any news on this??

Well it's available on Netflix but the quality is about the same as the crappy VHS - cropped and scanned - blurry and faded - will we ever see a DVD release of this haunting, beautiful classic?

reply

With the world moving over to everything being Cloud based & streaming it seems unlikely.

Just for everyone's Info: The French version was JUST released in a LIMITED to 1200 DVDs edition in germany under it's original german title "Und vor Lust zu sterben"... it's the French 85 minute version in full 16:9 WIDESCREEN and it DOES have ENGLISH SUBTITLES!! :) Anyways... the picture quality is VERY good... better than I had ever hoped it would look (and it's very colorful when compared to the bad Paramount VHS from years ago)

The title sequence is with german Titles... but otherwise the full french version can now be enjoyed in this limited edition. I doubt this will get a release elsewhere quickly... but at least the wait is now over for fans of this film and they can now enjoy the film as Vadim intended. In full color and wide screen.

Also, in relation to what the other posters want, Paramount isn't a charity and won't just do this because they want it done (although they could outsource it to Olive Films, which releases older Paramount titles onto DVD/Blu-Ray under license.)
