Who could play Archie Rice today?

A long time ago, while at the Sorbonne, I read The Entertainer and was too callow to understand or enjoy it. Viewing it adapted for film on Turner Classic Movies is an entirely different experience. It is an outstanding movie, and Laurence Olivier's performance is a thing of genius.

My wife and I had the same thought watching Olivier. We were reminded of John Malkovitch. The eyes, the mouth, the mannerisms even. So, fellow movie-goers, what do you think -- could a remake be possible with Malkovitch cast as Archie?

reply

I think Al Pacino would be good. He's one charasmatic sonuvabitch and carries homosexual aura around but is far from it and is in my opinion just as good as an actor.

Is the play good? I thoght the movie was brilliant; latley TCM has been showing great stuff and I get to catch it all cause I'm on Spring Break. Somtimes I stay up till like 4 to catch a showing of Passage to Marseille or somthing. I think films are overlooked as in not being taught in schools like they do with literature. Literature is probably better for learning but you can learn stuff from movies too. They should at least teach Citizen Kane or somthing, most kids think it's a rock group or somthing.

P.S.-A Patch of Blue airs 10:30PM on Wed. Theres somthin you can learn from
P.P.S.-Did you catch The Entertainer on Monday? Just curious.

reply

Absolutely not. He's too caught up in being "theatrically realistic" without actually being natural. Nor has he shown any evidence of the over-the-top theatrical technique needed for the music hall scenes. I can't think of an American actor who could do the role -- Christopher Walken probably comes closest -- and very few Brits: Kenneth Branagh is still too young. Robert Lindsey could probably do it, and I'd love to see him go at it in a theatre. Ian McKellan could do it, and probably John Wood -- but why on earth would anyone ever try to film it again? Plays are meant to be recreated day after day after day. Films are not. Take another recent remake, "Alfie". Apparently someone thought "hey, let's re-make Alfie, and make it relevant to today." The thing is, the original Alfie is still relevant today. So on the one hand you have Michael Caine, Lewis Gilbert, Sonny Rollins, Otto Heller, and a brilliant supporting cast, and in the remake you have a bunch of people who suck. "The Entertainer" is a brilliant, relevant movie, there is no reason to remake it.

Robert Lindsay is set to play Archie Rice in London next year, I'm going to go and see it. I think he'd actually be very good, although Sir Larry WAS Archie Rice. No one can come close to him exceot perhaps Lindsay who is just one of the finest actors around today. I'm also auditioning to play Archie Rice in a local thearte group in September. Not sure I can see myslef too much in the part though.

I'm England, that's all - Laurence Olivier

reply

Yes Robert Lindsay IS playing the role at the Old Vic in London from 23 Feb 07 to 19 May 07.

Saw it yesterday (still in preview) and wasn't overwhelmed. Couple of very strong performances from wife and grandfather but did seem like a 50 year old period piece without too much to say to this 50 year old audience member other than it's always good to see live theatre of a good standard.

I always see one person playing Archie Rice. It would of course entail a certain amount of script revision but the as I see it the only equivalent of Archie in today's world is Ray Davies of the musical group the Kinks. He writes songs, and performs them, in a way that is oddly similar to the music hall performers of the 1940s. I think it could be a brilliant vehicle for him and some of the Kinks' music could even be used.

Oooo. Love it.

Never thought of that.

Ray Bolger, i believe, played Archie in a US TV adaptation.

reply

Agggh. He played Billie. That's what comes of getting old - your memory fades.

Jack Lemmon played Archie.

I knew that sounded wrong the instant i hit the "Send" key...

The bloke who plays Roy Cropper in Coronation Street.

Branagh is actually around the same age Olivier was, though I don't necessarily think that's enough to qualify. As for your comment regarding "Alfie," I couldn't agree more.

This is one heavy, heavy role. A character so stuffed with sentimentality that only an acting giant could make him believable off stage and sympathetic. Olivier didn't quite manage to un-sweeten Archie Rice. At moments, he does seem believable, but eventually bursts into a theatrical performance. This character is not suited for the screen, imho. And Olivier is one of them hams that never truly mastered acting for the screen. Lousy choice from the very beginning.

Who would want to remake this load of boredom? Second to "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" it's the most tedious film I've seen. Actually I didn't see all of "T.S.W.C.I.F.T.C." - it was so bad I walked out halfway through.

reply

Osborne wrote "the entertainer" for Olivier, so it's difficult to find someone else who could play Archie.
Archie is Olivier and Olivier is Archie.

Horseballs.

The Entertainer was already remade in 1975 as a TV movie with Jack Lemmon in the title role; it could be remade again, this time about another type of entertainer since vaudeville is completely gone (maybe a stand up comedian or a singer.) It can also be about a man in his 40s going through this as well; it doesn't have to be about a much older man like Olivier, and as said before, others have played it on stage.

5+ years ago, I saw The Entertainer on stage with Kenneth Branagh as Archie. (The poor man has condemned himself to always chasing Olivier's ghost.) He was good, though technique-y, performance. The standout was Greta Scacchi as the wife.
