Ruth's mental state

After Ivo tells Ruth that her strict parents are the reason why she doesn't laugh much, she watches children playing in the street, and gradually regresses into childlike behavior. Some complex psychology is going on that I don't understand. Why does Ruth lose her mind and become childlike?
