Why did S. King choose this movie?

Hi, I have not seen this movie, but I am reading right now "Hearts in Atlantis" and I would like to know if there are any particular reasons S. King chose this movie to be mentioned repeatedly in the book...

I noticed that too (as soon as I saw that part I came to the IMDb page to find more about it), but does it have to have a particular reason?

Don't know the novel but this film is one of the most emotionally beautiful films ever made. Most of the main stream critics (at the time) were appalled by its straight forward approach to the "realities" of life

I suspect is was just King's fondness for the film. Like "Hearts of Atlantis," the film deals in part with a young boy who has a klinging mother and an absent (most of the time, as a traveling salesman) father. BTW, here's another subliminal tie-in. In King's book, the boy's name is Bobby. In the movie, the young boy called Sonny is played by an actor named Robert (Bobby) Eyer.
