Where do I get this movie?

I am looking for a VHS or DVD of this movie. Does anyone know if this is for sale anywhere and where it is? It was made in 1960 with Robert Preston and Dorothy McGuire. I can't seem to locate it anywhere. Just post to the message board and I will check often. Thanks from Linda

Linda, I have wondered the same thing but I don't think it's available on DVD or VHS which is a shame because it's a great movie. The first time I saw it was at a drive-in when I was 8 and it made such an impression on me. No one ever broadcasts it either. If you find out something, please let me know.
Thanks,
Debbie

Hello, It is now November and I don't know if you have found a copy yet, but I have one. Let me know if you want it. Diane

Sad to say, ladies, but this beautiful motion picture has NEVER BEEN
RELEASED ON VIDEO -- EVER!

Ted Turner has the current broadcasting rights, so just keep looking for it
at TCM (Turner Classic Movies).

I came across this movie here and since those commenting here are so positive on it, I would like to know more about it. But the IMDB page doesn't really tell much. Could someone provide just a brief synopsis of the film and why it is so admired? Thanks.

Hi, just a brief note about this movie. It is made from a William Inge play. A father in rural Oklahoma loses his job and is desperately seeking solace. He looks for it in the local drugstore "medicine" man. He looks for it in his wife but he fails to tell her the truth. His family consisting of a wife, daughter and a son are having multiple problems but no one is talking about them. Problems begin to fester driving Father to the arms of another woman, but he falls asleep and nothing transpires. Sound familiar? What makes this standout in my opinion is the dialogue, the sensitivity of the actors, look for a very young Shirley Knight and an as always beautiful Dorothy McGuire. Robert Preston is great as the father. In fact all of the acting in this movie is impeccable and very believable. It is a great commentary on family life and issues and the importance of communication. By all means try to catch it somewhere. I do not have it, but I have seen it several times. Also, the score is very enchanting.

I will look for it on TCM or AMC or somewhere.

You might get a copy from a place called MOVIEHUNTER. I was able to get a copy of "with a song in my heart" which also has not been released on dvd or vhs it's not cheap, 50+shipping, but worth every penny

Hello, I read your response to the demand for "Dark At The Top of the Stairs" and your comment on finding "With a Song In My Heart". I, too, would like to get the former movie, but, I do have the latter...With a Song In My Heart. I think it is the BEST "musical-drama" ever made. I love the acting, the music and the time period it is set in. I recorded my copy off the TV a few years ago. I first saw this movie back in the early 60's on " NBC's Saturday Night at the Movies" when I was a kid and loved it then. An item I have that is probable harder to find than the movie itself is an original recording(record album) of the sound track of this movie. It is in "78" format.

I wouldn't give Moviehunter the time of day, I ordered a different film and they charged my card immediately and six months later still nothing, they even shouted on the phone that they had proof of delivery...bunch of garbage.

reply

Well, let's keep this thread going and maybe eventually the film will become available and we can all let each other know.

reply

This is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Look on iOffer.com. It's a barter/auction site. And it is NOT expensive.

Thanks BoMar.

I taped it years ago on TNT and it has commericals. I have since transferred it to DVD (poorly) and it will have to suffice unitl its rebroadcast, or released on DVD.

This film will be on at 5:30 a.m. EST Wednesday, Feb. 14, on the MoreMax channel, a Cinemax channel available on DirecTV and several cable systems.

Incidentally, the film is NOT part of the Ted Turner/Turner Entertainment holdings unless it's some sort of odd exception. Turner's purchase of old films/TV consisted mainly of pre-1950 Warner films, pre-1986 MGM films, the RKO library, and "Gilligan's Island." TCM can run the films Turner purchased seemingly without limit, but they have to lease anything else, and that costs them more and thus keeps those films from showing as often. It's a lease job even though Time Warner now owns both TCM and the 1950-present Warner films. TCM must lease a post-1950 Warner film just as they would a film from Columbia, Universal, etc.

(Edit: I do see in another thread here where TCM has aired the film at least once.)

reply

Looks like MoreMax has replaced the film with "Innerspace"! That's weird--every classic film I've ever seen listed on a Cinemax channel has aired as scheduled. Wonder what happened?

reply

WEIRD ... more like FRAUDULENT.
I ordered the Cinemax package last week just to tape this single film. I am appalled that they would just take it out of the schedule with no explanation or apology.
I intend to write a strong complaint letter to the FCC.

reply

Go to it, film-collector!!
After I saw the post about "Dark" being on Moremax, I went to the Cinemax website to confirm the time and scheduled showing. It was not there!! I checked all around the schedule for it, up, down, forward, back, in case it had been shifted or something. Nothing. Sensing something fishy, I didn't sign up for Cinemax, though I had seriously thought of doing it just to see this film. It was totally unfair, irresponsible and underhanded of them not to show it. I wonder what's going on. Why is it so hard for the networks, stations and/or studios to give devoted fans a simple showing of a classic film! God knows they show thousands of crappy movies over and over day in and day out! Can't they show the good ones????

reply

Does anyone know if taping a dvd from vhs makes for a quality film worth buying as they have several on that one site that was recommended here.

I for one, cannot understand why i watched so many good films such as friendly persuasion and home from the hill and on and on , fanny for another one, all gone , where?
also to take a film that was scheduled off , seems fishy to me. as Gnomon2says, why can't we have a good movie?

reply

"that one site" -- which site? I'd like to go there. Was it MOVIEHUNTER or perhaps <iOffer.com>

Let me know at <[email protected]>

reply

the site was i offer, it was offered in dvd which makes me suspicious as i have ordered movies from ebay in dvd , rare ones and they were grainy. there are about 3 i believe of this movie on the site.

reply

If anyone knows or hears of a place to get good copies of this movie, by which I mean good quality without graininess etc, please let us know. Thanks.

reply

I got my DVD copy of this movie from iOffer awhile ago and it's in fabulous shape, not grainy at all, totally intact.

I have this movie on dvd, not the greatest print in the world but still nice to watch. It is a combination of a 16mm transfer/recording from HBO.

reply

Oh course right after I finally buy my copy I realize that this is available online.

I haven't watched it yet through TV Links yet, but strangely enough, this rare film is listed. Watch it here for free.
