Why the crying clown?

On the DVD I watched, after Elissa's rope "breaks" and she falls to the ground and dies, we see one of the clowns in his dressing room looking sad as he looks at a photograph of her that he keeps on his mirror, as if he had been in love with her.

Why was this in the movie? It's as if the clown was being introduced to become part of the plot but then the film leaves the thread dangling, never taking it up again. Maybe it was from a subplot that was edited out, but they neglected to remove that fragment?

Just watched this movie tonight on Netflix and noticed the same thing! Was hoping that he'd go ballistic and try and take out the evil doctor, but no! Must have been a cut subplot, but I'm almost wondering if he was either her father or brother as opposed to a possible lover...
