Carry On Cross-Dressing

is it just me or do a hell of a lot of the carry ons (and a lot of other Brit comedies from that era) have scenes where men dress up as women?

it happens in:
Carry On Constable
Carry On Cabby
Carry On Cleo
Carry On Girls
Carry On Matron

and probably loads of others that i cant recall at this moment. i wonder how many times a man has actually had to pass himself off as a woman in order to avoid an even more embarrassing situation in real life??

Hello there, post from a couple of years ago. How was life back in 2007?

To answer your question, there is a huge theatrical tradition in Britain of cross-dressing which has pre-Shakespearean roots (back when theatre companies were almost exclusively male), all the way to the modern Christmas pantomimes with their Dames and Best Boys.

'An interesting question. I don't suppose you've turned up a study (elsewhere) in the last several years which answers it?

you do get it in some american films as well. I was a male War Bride for example, and Some like It Hot.
