the ending

Anyone else think she totally ended up with the wrong guy? I think Sinatra's character was just a slime, Louis Jourdan totally should have gotten her. Am I the only one that thinks that?

I totally agree with you. To be honest I was dissapointed in the whole film though, I spent ages getting hold of a copy as research as I am in a can can troupe, and was very fed up to discover the dance is hardly in the film at all.

You're not the only one who thinks that; she chooses Sinatra (whose character humiliated her) over Louis Jourdan (at her beck and call), what was wrong with her?!

Absolutely. I saw this movie years and years ago, and just remembered the songs, so I wanted to see it again. But, when I saw it again, I was disappointed that she picked Sinatra's character Louis Jordan. Especially after what happened when she performed that risque song and dance in front of all those society people. Philippe applauds her and acts like she's the most dignified elegant person there, even though those were his friends. And, Sinatra's character(Francois, I think) just turns around and walks out, leaving her to face everyone alone.

she must like the bad guy !! women make bad choices when young..bad guys mean nothing to me now,who needs a challenge all the time :)

There's a reason for that. In the original Broadway show on which this film is "based" (and I use that term very loosely), La Mome Pistache does end up with the judge because the lawyer character was an insertion created by the screenwriters specifically to give Sinatra a role. In fact, the entire screenplay almost completely rewrote the original libretto. The stage version is miles above the film.

I found the ending most surprising and a bit unsatisfying, just like the rest of the film.

It's been a while since I've seen it but it never bothered me that Simone ends up with Francois. After all Frank Sinatra was a bigger star than Louis Jordan and got top billing so I would've been surprised if it went the other way. Perhaps Phillipe should've ended up with Claudine as a consolation prize?

reply

Yes! I watched this a couple weeks ago on TCM and even though I like Sinatra I hated his character in this movie. I felt she should have ended up with Jordan, he was a much nicer and honorable man.

Totally agree with everybody. I've seen Can-Can this morning and the ending doesn't make any sense at all. She is in love with Jourdan, who really loves her, there is no reason for her to marry Sinatra.
Can you imagine Delmot Mulroney marrying Julia Roberts at the end of My best friend's wedding instead of Cameron Diaz? This is the same.
Awful, awful ending.
