Van Helsing consistancy issue

Hammer's Van Helsing doesn't know what he's talking about... I know Hammer tends to be inconsistent but has anyone noticed that in Horror of Dracula (Dracula 1958) Doctor Van Helsing claims vampires cannot take animal form yet in the direct sequel, Brides of Dracula (which shows clips of Horror of Dracula at it's start) says they can take animal form, in fact you see Baron Meinster take bat form. Cut ahead to the 1970s. Peter Cushing is playing a Van Helsing and this time he claims he's never heard of fire working against a vampire... yet fire is used in Brides of Dracula and lightning strike / fire is in Scars of Dracula. I think Doctor Van Helsing has a memory problem.

In Dracula (1958), Van Helsing says to Holmwood that he has studied vampirism with some of the greatest minds in Europe, and yet they have only just scratched the surface. Each encounter with a vampire becomes a new opportunity to discover more about their nature and various powers, so it's not surprising that, in the sequel, with regards to vampires changing into bats, he admits "some vampires have that power". The Van Helsing character in the modern-day Dracula films is of course a descendant of the Van Helsing in the early Dracula films, and so you can't claim inconsistency if the 1970s Van Helsing doesn't know everything the Victorian Van Helsing did. They are not the same person.
