Does anyone else like "Bells are Ringing"?

I really love this movie! It's on the top of my list for the best musicals ever. I've asked other people about it and most have never heard of it. It's also very hard to find information about the movie on the internet. If there is anyone else out there that likes this movie I'd like to know. And by the way... what's your favorite song? I especially like "It's a Perfect Relationship", "Drop That Name", and "I'm Going Back" although I love all the songs.

I also enjoy this movie. i don't understand why the color of judy's dress in the last scene was that shade of blue. it doesn't do a thing for her and the rest of her dresses were very pretty on her. as for drop that name i kept missing them and wish that they didn't go for so many.

I really agree with you. It now appears from time to time on TCM classic movies in Europe and each time I ache to think that it was Judy Holliday's last movie. She was absolutely superb in it and the supporting cast were fine too. The women's costumes were superb too and perfectly indicative of what women wore the ( I was 17 at the time and was really interested in things like that).

No doubt about it for me. The song of the movie was "The Party's Over" a total classic and bitter sweet to think that for Judy this was in many ways true as she was to die but 5 years later at the age of 40 or 41 and would not make another movie.

I never heard of this movie until I saw it on TCM a month ago. It was increadible. The songs were very catchy, my faveorite was 'Better that a Dream'. Dean Martin and Judy Holliday worked suprisingly well together.

This movie was sooooo good. I just got finished watching it. Wow!! Judy Holliday was amazing. I have never seen any of her movies, and Dean Martin plays a great romantic lead. Frankly I've only been exposed to his dramatic work. This movie was a witty breath of fresh air. The writing is amazing. Very entertaining movie all around.

Here is a little triva.

"I'm Going Back" was the last song to be added to the musical. The director added it to the end to give Julie Holliday one last number to grab the audiance. In those days Broadway shows played on the road before they opened New York. It gave the creative team a chance to fix problems in the show before it opened. Some shows died on the road and never made it to New York.

At any rate, during the earlier performances Sidney Chaplin (a son of Charlie) was playing the Dean Martin role. He was a good looking guy, and he kept getting bigger hands at the end than Julie was getting. "I'm Going Back" fixed that. After the song was added just before the show opened in New York Julie got the standing O's from that time foward.

I'm right there with you. I just went and bought the DVD and it is wonderful. Judy Holliday is a treasure in this movie. I love the song by the bookies and, of course, The Party's Over. I was more surprised to see Jean Stapleton in this movie and, in an uncredited role, Len Lesser (SEINFELD'S Uncle Leo)as one of the people on the street that Judy and Dean introduce themselves to. Even though it is not the most remembered musical of its time, it is certainly one of the very best.

I'm trying to find someone who has seen this movie and who might recognize actor John Hart, who is reportefly in this film. I haven't seen the film but will look for it in future TCM broadcasts. I'd like to find out if John was in the film and his character name in the film. John played The Lone Ranger for one season and was also "Hawkeye" in that t.v. series for one season.

I ADORE this movie! Judy Holiday is absolutely hilarious! I love all of her songs, because her face is just so animated all the time! I love it when she is actually on the phone helping people out. I wish they still made movies like this. People don't seem to remember lighthearted musicals like this one. It's too bad.

It could be my favorite musical ever. Yes, I think it is.

This was the last musical produced by the Freed Unit at MGM - Comden and Green had written it for their friend Judy Holliday and tailored it to her, which is why BELLS has never really been very successful without her - she was the main reason for its' Broadway success and the film version wouldn't have amounted to much with anyone else. Holliday had been off the screen since 1956 (when she opened in the stage version) and Dean Martin was box-office insurance (he makes me want to hit the fast-forward button). As has been mentioned this was Holliday's final film appearance - it was also (aside from the final shots of THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC) her only appearance in a color film.

Jean Stapleton had appeared in the role of Sue in the Broadway production - she had also appeared in the original production of DAMN YANKEES and recreated her role in the film version of that musical - in 1964 she would be a member of the original cast of FUNNY GIRL. A few years after that her role as Edith Bunker on TV's ALL IN THE FAMILY would make her a household name.
