A musical that wasn't a typical musical...

I found myself so caught up in the cute story, the fact it was a musical almost seemed 'secondary' to me. Perhaps because the singing numbers were fit in so easily, it was 'seamless'.

And, who knew Judy Holiday had such a lovely singing voice. What a shame she died so young...She was a delightful star.

I agree, not a typical musical. Rodgers and Hammerstein not! Yes, the songs are seamless.

I've seen this movie a number of times and never tire of it. The IMDB score and some of the reviews are preposterous. Some say it was "stagy". So what? It was a play! Some idiot says The Midas Touch was terrible. It was supposed to be -- it was written by a dentist for chrissake! Another complains about the subplot with the gamblers, which was in fact one of the endearing elements -- a Simple Little System.

I think this one was beyond many. Comden and Green wrote New York plays for New Yorkers (Bandwagon was another gem of theirs). Hicks don't get them. Theirs was an era in American musical theatre that will never be surpassed.

My goodness. I had no idea I was in such a sophisticated crowd. Even though I've set foot in the center of the universe, otherwise known as New York City, only once, I actually like Comden & Green. A lot. Betty Comden is my hero. And I'm nothing but a hick from North Carolina who now lives in the seething heart & core of Flyover Country, Ohio. Imagine. A hick like me being able to comprehend Comden & Green.

I hope Betty & Adolph haunt your dreams, screaming, "Never, never insult your audience, ya dope!"

If you don't get them, then you're a hick. You get them, so obviously you aren't, even though you hail from NC and OH.

You're straining too hard to be insulted. Sorry if you don't like the word, but they do exist, as evidenced by some of the reviews, which I pointed out.

As for never insult your audience, that advice only applies to the performers. Anyway, comics have been quite successful insulting their audiences. Even some politicians, like Huey Long -- "You're all hicks!" (He was shot by a non-hick.)

In these days of social media (message boards like this included), anyone who reads your posting is your audience.

Personally I don't like insults from performers I've spent my hard earned money to be entertained by. It may have worked for Texas Guinan or the Sex Pistols, but these days with so many entertainment options, it pays to be respectful.
