What is the best gag in the film?

My own favourite is the ringing telephone sequence. This gag has been done before in other films and by other comedians but I don't think its been bettered. Lewis' comedy timing as he tries to pick up the right telephone is absolutely spot on. I especially like the scene where he "herds" three telephones together between his arms.

I love his facial expressions when he's pushing the elevator buttons.

Yes, I love that scene; just remembering it made me chuckle.

I also liked the part where Jerry had trouble getting off the escalator, Melton's cameo, the camera-gag, the invisible orchestra and every scene that involved the Stand Laural imitator.

"The Beatles?! I can sing better than all of them put together, and I'm younger...than all of them put together."- Dean Martin in 'Kiss Me, Stupid.

The VW gag was the best.

I'm chiming in four years later but I just watched the film, as it's now available streaming in HD on Netflix. I have to say, the scene where the newly wed couple - who were engaged for 16 years - are about to head to their honeymoon suite to finally consumate their love...and then the husband slips and falls, breaking his back because Jerry Lewis was waxing the floor...

That was comedy gold.

The entrance scene to the Fontainebleau Hotel by star "Jerry Lewis" and his entourage: "HOLD IT! ...Just HOLD IT!!!....Stop with the brushing! ...Wrong-Way Corrigan and of course Bill Holden's Aunt. Ha-Ha Bill Holden's Aunt? Yes."

I think the phone bit was the best! I just saw it again after a few years and that part had my crying laughing! Especially when he gets pissed and throws the phone right when the bell captain comes back!
I also like the beginning of the movie where all the workers split off but he doesn't know where to go. So he just walks in circles, sprints off to nowhere and wipes the table for dust.

I love the ending best. Because, it's true! They never talked _to_ him. They just barked orders and/or asked sarcastic, rhetorical questions.
