Wow, I'm the only one?

Who else here loves this movie? I grew up watching it on video. My dad and I would act out the different things that Stanley does in the movie, like in the beginning when he can't decide what to do and walks in different directions! lol! I also loved Stanley's facial expressions during the invisible orchestra scene! Hahaha!

I've worn out the tape, so I'm gonna have to get the DVD!

Yeah, I'm planning to get the dvd too. I love all Jerry Lewis movies b/c of the facial expressions that made you laugh and his incredible talent as a musician. The scene in which he is taking a picture in daylight puzzled me b/c it got dark after he snapped the camera. haha Great movie.

The DVD is definitely worth getting. I just got it yesterday. It's got plenty of special features like rehearsals, an outtake with Milton Berle, footage of JL rehearsing for his nightclub act at the hotel, tv promos and theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, feature commentary by JL himself and a home movie reel of JL going out promoting this film with commentary by his son, Chris.

The theatrical trailer alone is worth it. It's got a hilarious scene with JL playing three different character as the director, writer and producer (since he really did all those things!). I think it could've been an alternate scene for the introduction by the studio executive. I keep wondering why they didn't put it in the movie!

Does your copy have small black dots in certain scenes kinda like black flies all over? Not sure if my copy is messed up or the movie is like that. I would appreciate if you can tell me, thanks.

I absolutely loved this movie!!

But I'm confused...who the heck is that other mute that walks about looking like Charlie Chaplin...they said "Joe Levitch" in the cast credits, which would be Jerry, but then that would mean he was casted twice...I'd say it was his dad, but
A. He's too young
B. IMDB says his name is "Danny Levitch"

His brother?

So, I am absolutely confused...

It's just an actor that looks like Stan Laurel and has copied his movements. Jerry wanted the real Stan, but he wouldn't do it. So basically, the film itself is like a tribute to his idol, Stan Laurel. You'll find the same guy in "The Errand Boy" in the elevator scene with the bubble gum. He's a great impressionist.

The actor playing the "Stan Laurel" character is Bill Richmond, who co-wrote several scripts with Jerry, including The Nutty Professor. Bill also makes cameo appearances in Jerry's The Errand Boy and Smorgasbord.

You're not the only one. 'The Bellboy' is dope! That "Stanley gag" works even with a Stan Laurel lookalike. 'The Delicate Delinquent' and 'The Nutty Professor' are more solid Jerry Lewis films. He must've been the Jim Carrey of his time.

reply

I believe the real Stan Laurel was already sick andfragile around this time. It was indeed a lovely tribute!

This is my second favorite Jerry Lewis movie ("Who's Minding The Store" is #1 for me... an absolute riot!) It finds its way into our DVD player regularly.

I love the atmosphere of the hotel - it was such a special treat to stay in a fancy hotel in the '60s... so different from today - I remember it well!

Jerry's schticks throughout the film are both hilarious and adorable... Stanley's such a sweet character. Just a great, great film!

Awwww, I know, it was such an amazing movie
*Sigh* I can't get enough of Jerry...

I simply adore this film. I remember wtching it as a little child and I found it kind of boring. Guess I was used to the conventional kind of movies and could not get the "no plot" humor. But watching it again recently I just found it genious, very smart. It doesn't need the explicit humor used nowadays to make people laugh. Simple and funny! One of Lewis's gems!
