L'Avvnetura vs. Blow-Up

I really liked Blow-Up and want to watch another of Antonioni's films, but I want to watch something different too. How similar is L'Avventura to Blow-Up?

reply

Not very. Blow-Up is much more poetic and feels influenced by French New Wave, while L'Avventura is a more literal, straightforward story.
That said, I too watched Blow-Up first (it's one of my favorite movies of all time) and didn't enjoy L'Avventura as much, but it is by no means a bad film. It just goes to show Antonioni's range.

Ed Norton is Tyler Durden and Rosebud is the sled.

Blow Up is much better.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, or doesn't.

Different films. Both have a basically Existentialist point of view, but Blow-Up thematically is obviously focused on the connection between perception and meaning, the epistemological relation to the metaphysical, while L'Avventura is more concerned with what Heidegger referred to as Being with Others.

In any Antonioni film the relation of the characters to the landscape is also significant. Blow-Up takes place entirely within London, comparing interiors mostly with the outdoor environment of the park. L'Avventura also of course has its interior shots, but the film also moves from the Aolian Islands to Palermo, Messina and even Rome. These choices effect the net result.

I have been familiar with Blow-Up much longer, but at this point I feel I might slightly prefer L'Avventura.

Blow Up bored me. You can fast forward throught it and you won't miss much. LA is more accessible, despite its reputation.
