I loved this movie !

And I was surprised when I saw the bad rating this movie has on imdb. It might not be perfect, but I loved the way this tragic war is described, the couple between the priest and the prostitute, the view on religion and faith (I'm an atheist)...
Very good movie, easily 8/10

Same here. It was a well-directed film with superb cinematography and an excellent score. The actors were enjoyable, and the story exceeded my expectations. All in all, I couldn't complain about much. If anything, I'd have to say that my biggest issue was that everyone spoke English instead of Spanish. As you said, it's easily earns 8/10.

Yeah, the cinematography is very good. I don't get why some of the reviewers here slammed it ("so dark you can't see where the action is taking place or who is in it" - bollocks!). I would guess those guys were used to Technicolor-style, tableau-like images. And it's a quite daring movie, politically: as put by one reviewer who got it, it truly shows the absurdity and cruelty of the war.

I don't even understand this comment. It’s too silly for words. Obviously, if everyone spoke Spanish, the movie would have been classified as a foreign film and would have had English subtitles. We have to remember this is a movie not a documentary.

The movie is set in Spain so we have to imagine the characters are speaking the local language even though we hear them in English. The movie was made primarily for an English speaking audience so it's in English. The filmmaker was not suggesting the people in Spain during the war spoke English to each other.

The movie was good in some ways but it could have been much better. Obviously, I didn't rate it as high as an eight; there were too many problems.

What I did like about the movie were the various themes the filmmakers touched on; though only barely. Still, it was enough to encourage people to, hopefully, do some research to learn more about that time and those issues.

I have to agree with the people who said there were some scenes that were a little to dark to see what was going on. I'll add there was also some confusion about new characters showing up who were not clearly identified. It may have been an attempt to show what it must have been like during the war. The two sides were almost indistinguishable from each other but I doubt it.

Anyway, I just saw the movie on TCM. In the commentary said there were actually a few issues with the movie. The studio, as it often did, interfered to the point the director said he never even saw the final released version of the movie. He was also forced to redo scenes in which Ms. Gardner looked too frumpy for their taste. All that means the movie we've all seen was not the director's own vision.
