What the...?
According to a comment on the Trivia section, Montgomery Clift and Rock Hudson were also considered for the role of Carrera. Obviously, Dirk Bogarde got the role so I have to ask why. Why were only gay actors considered for the role? What are the filmmakers trying to say about Catholic priests?
I suppose anyone can play a priest but what are the odds that each of the three actors on the short list turned out to be gay? The other part of the problem is the role itself. It's about a priest who falls in love with a woman. They couldn't think of any other actors in Hollywood who could play that role?
The story was interesting but I felt absolutely no passion from Dirk Bogarde. Who can blame him though? There's acting and then there's acting. Gays are probably the best actors around because most of them are living a lie and acting all the time. That would've been especially true in the era in which this movie was made. However, onscreen, just as in life, some of us can see right through the facade. Bogarde looked about as romantically interested in Gardner as a vegan would be interested in eating a steak while wearing fur. There are some things one cannot easily fake.
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
