Pretty good movie but they lay it on too thick

To 1960s Hollywood all racism on earth was in the south, no where else. The southern guy shown is not only a racist but also a coward, a rapist, a mutineer, and a drunk. Even a bit of nuance in Paul Richards' performance (an actor I like) would have lifted the film up another level.

Loved Alan Ladd's line about losing Lieutenants. The screenwriter hit home on that one. Just one question, it appeared to me when Sidney was carrying wounded Alan out of the farmhouse, was Ladd laughing? Very quick scene, it's hard to tell but that's how it appeared to me. Can anyone else tell.

Horrible last scene with Sidney killing Commies to Dixieland. Totally cringeworthy.

The period flaws pull it down to C+ to B- but I still like it.
