Bring back Surfside 6

Recently Surfside 6 enjoyed a limited run on the Goodlife television network. The show has a popular fan base and when Goodlife recently removed the show from its lineup, a great many of us who post on their message boards, have taken to writing letters, sending emails and creating petitions to put our show back on the air.
If anyone else has enjoyed the show or would like to take part in our campaign, please check us out at Goodtv.com and we will add you to our on line petition list.
Surfside 6 was a great show, and although it is a black and white show, it beats anything that is on the air today.

I heard a reference to "Surfside Six" from Stewy (sp?) on Family Guy today so I googled it. I can't remeber seeing an episode but I do remember "77 Sunset Strip". Very snappy theme song (with snapping fingers). Also I seem to recall a very sexy woman in animal print pedal pushers (Capri pants?) She had a cat, er, maybe a big cat, like a cheetah or leopard. Oh and she had a beauty mark (mole) on her face (like Ginger (Tina Louise) on Gilligan's Island. Anybody know who that woman was?

Surfside 6 ran on Monday nights between 1960 and 62. 77SS ran on Friday nights and ran about 4 years, I think. While 77SS was set in Los Angeles, SS6 was set in Miami Beach and centered around 2 partners (Thorne and Madison) living on a houseboat. The 3rd unpaid partner was Sandy Winfield who resided at the Racquet Club and owned the dock site which he rented to the two detectives.

I don't remember a girl in a leopard print outfit on 77SS unless it was Suzanne, the switchboard operator. She was the only regular female in the cast.

Both shows are now appearing on American Life TV on Mondays. 77SS appears every week while SS6 and Bourbon Street Beat alternate with Hawaiian Eye following the Sunet Strip shows.

Surfside 6 sounds awesome, like a 60's miami vice.
Hope I get to see it sometime although that seems unlikely here in Canada.
I stumbled across it while checking out famed director Robert Altman who directed an episode.

And now that the Goodlife TV (read American Life TV) network braintrust has decided to remove this show again from their lineup (as well as Hawaiian Eye and Bourbon Street Beat) its time for another letter writing campaign. There is so much drivel on that channel now and yet they take off the cream of their crop. What the???!!!

Hi.. Surfside 6 was one of my favorite old shows so I was really upset when it suddenly disappeared from the American Life Network. I had wanted to get this network for years when I heard they were rerunning the classic Warner Brothers shows..with also Cheyenne, Bronco and Lawman as favorites of mine too.
When my cable company finally switched to Time Warner and I started receiving this network and these shows I was ecstatic..but just 8 months later in one week Surfside was gone..and gone before I had a chance to see all the episodes from season 2..which I really had been longing to see.
I did call the network's programming department last week and am sorry to report even more bad news. The lady in programming informed me that the network's contract with Warner Brothers is over in October so by then ALL the Warner Brothers old series will have to be removed.
Is there anything anyone thinks can be done? Maybe a letter writing or petition campaign to have them renew that contract?

reply

Yes, I also saw an ad that said they were adding Mission Impossible to their lineup in October. So it seems they are abandoning the shows from the 50's and 60's and looking more to the late 60's and 70's for their programming. This is a terrible shame. I loved all the private eye shows about equally, so I will be extremely disappointed by this strategy change. It seems that no one wants to cater to folks who want to see the old programs anymore. I had not known that they were eliminating the westerns in a few months also - if they do that their channel will become almost useless to me. I have also sent off emails to their Vice President but he did not have the courtesy to reply to me.

Have you checked with the WBTV Posse to see what further action might be taken?

Surf Side 6, Hawaiian Eye or any of these type shows of the early '60's that featured any surfing or skateboarding in them. i'm a surfing historian and trying to find the shows that had surfing in them.. sometimes the title of the show doesn't mention surfing.. any help would be greatly appreciated. Scotty email me at [email protected] if you can remember anything..

The opening theme song and credits of Hawaiian Eye actually had the main stars from the show out in the ocean surfboarding on the waves. The stars included Anthony Eisley, Robert Conrad and Connie Stevens all giving it a go.

reply

Yeah, it looks real. They seem to be outdoors and Diamondhead is in the background. But...They seem to be awfuly close together. Their body position is straight up, as if remaining on top the board required little effort. They are all looking to the side to smile at the camera. Were all of them that good as surfers? I'm not sure how, but I wouldn't be surprized if that opening was faked.

Count me in! I MISS Surfside 6 too!
Where do I write?

reply

Lancy2,
Write to Mark Ringwald at ALTV or email him at [email protected]. Let him know about your frustrations and keep emailing him on a regular basis or snail mail which ever works for you.

Tell him you want the show back on the air. We, the member of the WBTV posse write every day or call or do something. It will be good to hear from some new blood so to speak.

Thanks for your interest. I really miss this show.

I have just recently become interested in "Surfside 6," "Bourbon Street Beat" and "77 Sunset Strip" due to watching the other TV show that Van Williams is most known for, which is "The Green Hornet." Due to my new interest in anything Van, I have been trying to locate some of the other work that he has done.

Since it seems like American Life is more focused on the shows from the late 1960's and 1970's, which I have no problem with, might I make a suggestion? Something that could possibly be done is to write to the WBHV folks and see if they will release the shows onto DVD. With the highly regarded reputation that Warner Bros has with their efforts to put out classic films and TV shows onto DVD and the quality of the DVDs themselves, it couldn't hurt. They have several shows that are coming out onto DVD, which have been aired within the past 10 to 15 years, so you never know if some of their classic TV shows are in the works. I know they released both seasons of "F-Troop" in 2006 and 2007 respectively to DVD, which I own and was also aired on American Life about a year ago, so it is possible they could be considering further releases in the near future.

You can see Van's body of work right here on IMDB. They have a list of his film credits and also the TV appearances. If you keep writing to American Life, perhaps it will help get the older shows back on. You can also check out the WBTV Posse web site. There are a bunch of us over there who love the old Warner shows and are trying to get them back on the air.
I would be watching the Green Hornet on that network if I still had it, but I gave it up when they took my favorite shows away.
Good luck and if you can't find the web site, email me and I'll find the exact URL for you.
Thanks for your interest in "anything Van. I'm in the same boat and have been looking for everything I could find for years. It's a life long love affair, I'm afraid.
