Danger Man: Better Than Bond?

OK people! I've watched the Danger Man episodes and I have to admit, in my personal opinion, they are miles ahead of the Bond Films! For a start, none of the Bond films has ever had an actor as good as Patrick Mcgoohan. I also think Drake makes for a more interesting character than Bond. So, what do you all think?

reply

I agree.

Yes, yes and YES!!! Drake is my favorite agent and Patrick McGoohan my favorite actor! The stories in DANGER MAN/SECRET AGENT are way more realistic than any Bond film.

Indeed, troubleshooter John Drake wasn't a womanizer, he usually got his man within 1/2 hour (1 hour in the later seasons) and without needing a license to kill; he did it usually without having to shoot anyone. I say usually, because while averse to guns in general he was quite adept at using one when he had to.

As the Bond movie plots got more fantastical, Danger Man (and the other freelance troubleshooter, the Saint) became better spy role models in retrospect.

I don't think anyone would accuse Bond of being intellectual (or the movies as being intelligent for that matter). Hands down Drake.

reply

Definitely John Drake. Smart, sexy, tough, capable with practical stuff, sophisticated, and has an intelligent moral code to boot-who could ask for more?

I'd have loved to see McGoohan put his unique spin on Bond, though; I think in some ways he'd have made a Bond who was closer to the novels than Connery's.

Reputedly, Patrick McGoohan was offered the role of James Bond before Sean Connery. He refused, of course.

Not only that--he supposedly recommended the producers test Connery, with whom he was pals through working together in films.

Did not know that. Thanks!

You're welcome. I thought it was pretty cool when I heard that.

reply

Maybe the wrong thread but anyone else notice that in the 60-61 series Drake introduces himself in the intro as Drake.... John Drake. In 1962 and since then Bond always introduces him self as Bond.... James Bond. Wonder if Ian Fleming was influenced by Danger Man?

reply

Yes, Drake...John Drake.

reply

Verily I say unto thee...I most certainly don't agree. Many of these episodes are painfully slow.

reply

Slow? They cram more plot into 25 minutes than many movies manage in 110.

reply

Bond is jokey, campy, filled with gadgets and women who have ridiculous names.

Drake is serious, smart, prefers to stay away from violence if he can help it, and sometimes gets things wrong. He's got a conscience.

I know who I prefer.
