Why was Checkmate cancelled?

I just got the complete series DVDs & have watched about 10 episodes so far. I was 8 years old when it premiered & I remember us watching it every time it was on. It was a great series then & still holds up because of the cast, writing, great guest stars & even some of the supporting characters were the TV series "old hands" who were good actors & some rising stars like Mary Tyler Moore. Good production values & music as well. I'm wondering why it was cancelled after just 2 seasons? Anyone have the scoop? I don't know what the ratings were in the second season.

It did so well its first season that CBS thought they could move it to Wednesday against NBC's popular and long-running Perry Como show. It wasn't a good idea on CBS's part; the ratings fell and they canceled it.
