Favorite episode

When Barney goes undercover at the department store to uncover the shoplifter. Him posing as a mannequin is still hilarious.

Two come to mind: The Christmas episode with old Ben Weaver intentionally getting himself arrested so he wouldn't be alone at Christmas, and the other is with Andy convincing some beatniks into helping the town's lousy marching band out in an audition so the mayor would let them go to the Capital to "perform".

Man in a Hurry. Good to see Mayberry from the perspective of an outsider.

Mine is A Date For Gomer. My favourite quote from the entire series is “Andy’s got hot knees.” It makes me laugh every time!

A lot of my favorite episodes are from the 3rd season.
Opie and the Spoiled Kid
Mountain Wedding
Aunt Bee's medicine Man
Andy Discovers America
Andy's English Valet
The Rivals
A Wife for Andy
Also the episode from season 2 where a hobo steals things and sets a bad example for Opie.
Also the season 1 episode where Andy lies to sell a cannon to a guy in charge of a museum.

Any episode with Ernest T. Bass!

Barney's First Car

Opie and the Spoiled Kid

Forgot the title, but it's the episode when Barney and Gomer are scared to enter an old "haunted house" to retrieve Opie's baseball. I wonder if the episode was the inspiration for Don Knotts later film, "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

reply

I remember that one. It's from season 4 and it has a brief appearance by the character Arnold Winkler from Opie and the spoiled kid. It maybe the only time he appears outside that episode.

reply

Since you narrowed it down, I was able to find the episode. It was "The Haunted House" I should have remembered that!

I forgot about Arnold being in that one. He sure was a lot better behaved. Presumably his "trip to the woodshed" did him a world of good. ha

reply

My favorite where Andy gets mad at Opie because he didn't give enough money in the school's charity drive and then had to eat his words when he found out the reason that Opie was saving his money.

reply

Yeah. I think it's called Opie's Charity and it is from Season 1. He was saving his money to buy a coat for a poor girl in his class.

reply

When Barney learns judo.

reply

That's a funny one. I also forgot to mention "Barney's Motorcycle" episode. It seems that so many of my favorites are Barney-centric ones.

reply

The pickle episode. Or "Citizen's Arrest." Those are my two favs.

reply

Citizen's Arrest in the first ten minutes or so is some of the best television period. Too bad the Gomer that stood up to Barney did not stick around in terms of awareness. Also, pushing back when being pushed himself. The 1963-64 season was most likely the best from start to finish.
