Formal Attire

Watching a segment with Andy and Opie at the public library. Both wore coat and tie to do some research on Battle of Mayberry. I was born in ‘59 and I just am amazed at old movies showing that people dressed up for airplane travel. Pearl-wearing Aunt Bee would shudder at todays teens wearing long pant pjs and houseshoes in hotel breakfast areas. Super Casual is the norm these days.

Nobody would dare get on a bus, plane, or boat without being properly dressed in the old days. When I fly, I don't wear jeans which is what I wear 90% of the time since I retired.

Check out old baseball games on youtube. Men wore white shirts and ties, women wore dresses. Different time.

You know, as much as I enjoy casual attire, there's something to be said for a little more formality on some occasions. And there's a difference between being casual but still looking nicely dressed, and just being an absolute slob in public.

I agree. So glad the shorts/jeans hanging below your rear end is not so much the style anymore. So hilarious and ridiculous to watch guys constantly pulling up their clothes.

It's also interesting to watch old NHL games and the refs wore ties also! And yes it's very telling to look into the stands of old baseball games. Yuck I hate dressing up outside in the summer heat! I can't believe all the cop shows where the detectives and undercovers are chasing the bad guys in suit, tie, and dress shoes.

I miss the days when people would dress up for airplane travel. In the 80's and 90's I used to ALWAYS wear a sport coat while flying. Part of the reason is they gave you that big 8" long ticket-holder and I needed somewhere to store it! It was convenient to slide into the inside pocket of a sport blazer. Now there is no ticket-envelope and I have a laptop bag. I often wear jeans now for comfort while flying, because it's gotten so cramped compared to 20+ years ago, but I would NEVER wear sweatpants or basketball shorts, and I cringe when I see people dressed what I feel is TOO casually.

Yet flight attendants cringe/laugh seeing women wearing high heels. While you never want to think of having to quickly evacuate the aircraft, it does make sense to wear more practical footwear.

I should clarify. When I fly, I might wear black jeans which I don't wear often because black jeans don't age well. When new, black jeans actually look good and are comfortable. I'll wear black jeans with comfortable leather shoes and a collared shirt or nice sweater in season.

Different times. People felt differently about jeans and denim when they were forced to wear it because they could not afford anything else. Back then there was no such thing as high end denim. Wearing non-denim clothing back then was a statement that you arrived economically.
