Even though I am from the Northeast most people here back then could not afford beef on a regular basis just like in the South. My dad and uncle always commented that chicken was on the table quite a bit when they were kids. And back then when chicken was on the menu it meant going out to the chicken coop to slaughter a bird or two starting with cutting their heads off. Getting hungry?

not really lol

Funnily enough where I live in Illinois chicken is the cheapest meat and you can get over a dozen pieces of chicken (though they are all the same kind of pieces) for only about $2. Where as a pound of groundbeef is like $3 or more. Depending on if it's on sale. So that very same thing is true today. Then again it makes sense because a chicken is way smaller than a cow and therefore costs less to cut up, clean, package, and ship to stores.

Where I live a person is not buying ground beef for under 5 dollars per pound. Chicken is still a deal at 2 dollars per pound boneless breasts. I need to find more recipes for chicken.

Aunt Bee was a good cook. Meatloaf is for idiots who can’t make a nice pot roast or smoked ham.

reply

I guess I am not a good cook since I hated a meatloaf I made once. But liked other peoples' meatloaf.

If you look closely whenever they eat, they usually just move around their food on their plates or take very little bites. Probably ate items that would not spoil after sitting under hot lights and after retakes of scenes. Hence, you never see eggs, ice cream or much meat actually eaten. Probably wasn’t very delectable for the actors.

When I was a kid my family took the Universal Studios tour. The tour guide explained that when you see ice cream on a TV show it's actually mashed potatoes with added food coloring.

I would assume this technique is still used today. An ice cream cone filled with mashed potatoes doesn't sound very appetizing.

yea on some newer show Ted Danson was on instead of yogurt it was cold mashed potatoes

29 cents / pound for chicken vs 45 cents / pound for beef in 1963, taken from a newspaper ad at that time. However, that was from the mid-west and the reality is beef at that time was going to be more expensive in the east than in the midwest because of the distance from slaughter houses. I suspect in a small town in the Carolina the price of beef could have been 25 to 50 percent higher... and then it is possible that chicken was even lower since local farmers would have raised chickens and sold them to others in the town at a lower price than you would find in a large city. So there was clearly a large difference in price and if you were a sheriff that wasn't on the take you wouldn't have had a lot of money to spare.
