1-14 The Horse Trader

"Do you wanna buy this cannon?" "Then quit makin faces"

Mayberry wants to get rid of their canon. They have a vote. Get rid of the cannon.
Barney was so antsy to tell people his vote he got Ellie in trouble from the Mayor.
He also didn't say his vote when asked because he didn't want to go on record as a trouble maker.

At the beginning Andy was giving Barney a hard time about not liking change.
"I don't think It's right for the United States Government to conduct business through a
slot machine." This was his response when the post office started selling stamps through a machine.

We learn about the golden rule. Do unto others. Andy tries to teach this to Opie.
Opie wanted to grow licorice sticks so he traded his new cap pistol.
"You think you've been followin' that rule?
Sure. Tommy did it unto me, and now I'm doin' it unto Jerry." Opie was great in this episode.

Andy tries to sell the cannon to a collector by telling him a bunch of tales about the cannon.
Later on Opie trades a cuff link for roller skates. Andy tries to explain that he was actually
lying and Opie is the one who teaches Andy yet another lesson.
In the end Andy actually "talks down" the price of the cannon and everybody feels better.
In the very last scene we find out a former member of Mayberry is donating the very
cannon they just sold.

Barney talked in this episode like he owned or lived in a house. He didn't want the cannon
in his front yard.
Elinor Donahue had a credit in this episode. Only her second. They say her name
during the opening credits.

A wonderful episode.

In 'The Cow Thief,' the mayor, who isn't especially fond of Andy's style to begin with, refers to the theft of two cows as a " crime wave " 😁 and demands it be brought to an immediate end. No wonder Catbooks wants to move to N. Carolina! 😄

reply

Ha!

If only stealing two cow meant a crime wave these days we'd all be a lot happier.

Great episode.

Damn Ron Howard did such a good job as Opie, I mean obviously the people on set helped but Opie was such a good character.

reply

Opie stole this episode by far.
He had the best scenes along with Andy teasing Barney about not liking change.

I liked that episode. It really did have a good point to it too. I will admit I don't like change either. But you just have to adjust to it.
