The Same Character, but with a Name Change During the Run of the Show

This is not for an actor or actress who played multiple roles, but the actor or actress who played the same role, but their first or last name changed and carried on for the duration of the show or until their character left the show..

Emma Brown became Emma Watson

Clara Johnson becomes Clara Edwards

any others you can think of?

Clara was named Bertha near the beginning of the series. Barney's middle name was Oliver, and I think something else before his middle initial became P.

reply

Opie's friend Howie's last name went from Pruitt to Williams.

reply

Goober was Beasley before it became Pyle.
Floyd was Colby before it became Lawson.

Burt Mustin, who mostly was called "Judd Fletcher" in the series was called "Jubel" in "The Mayberry Band" episode.

reply

Opie's girlfriend/classmate was Karen Burgess, Karen Folker, Bertha, Sharon McCall and Sharon Porter.

reply

Karen/Sharon also was called Ethel in the episode "The Rumor."

reply

Not to be confused with Jubel Foster, who accused Opie of burning his barn down.

Asa the night watchman / bank guard / hotel clerk was called both Asa Bascomb and Asa Breeney.

The band director that hired Jim Lindsey the guitar player was Bobby Fleet in two episodes during season one, but then later, Freddy Fleet, although Freddy Fleet was played by a different, completely different looking actor, but apparently it was supposed to be the same character.

I read somewhere (maybe on IMDB) that the producer simply forgot the character's name and used the wrong name when writing the later episode.

reply

If I am not mistaken, there were three Bobby Fleets.

reply

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Floyd's name was also changed.

S1 E12 Stranger in Town was the first appearance of Floyd the Barber. Walter Baldwin played Floyd. No last name given.

In S1 E13, McNear's first appearance as Floyd, the character's last name was "Colby;" thereafter, the character was always "Floyd Lawson."

Joseph H. Hamilton played the same type of person in 11 episodes. He first appears as Chester Jones then is not named in a few then as Jason, Choney Latham and Jase. Part of the problem is that you have different writers for many of the episodes.

Didn't Mr. Foley at the grocery store become "Mr. Doaks", in the episode where Opie competes with a boy named Billy for a job?
