Deputy Otis,,,

I just watched "Deputy Otis" and I thought it was very good. The reviewer said the ending was a downer but I didn't think so. However, the reviewer did say that it was nice to see some character-development in Otis and I definitely agree with this.

I'm afraid I don't have anything earth-shattering to say but I just wanted to share this with folks that care.

I don't think the ending is a downer either. It's just an example of hypocrisy or irony via his brother who claims to be better than Otis in every way.

Yes, even though on the one hand, it's funny that BOTH Otis & his brother are respective town drunks who know enough - by habit - to put themselves in jail without first needing to be arrested for public intoxication until they sober up by morning, it overlooks the very real problem of alcoholism.

However, this show being a comedy takes the light-hearted approach.

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

I think the problem of alcoholism wasn't dealt with at all in comedies of the time. Given the fact that Otis was an ice cream salesman in a much later made-for-TV-movie attests to the fact that this disease really wasn't realized in TAGS. It was, however, realized in the movie.

BTW, thanks for the reply!

I've always liked Stanley Adams, who played Otis' brother. He was an alcoholic in real life and died by suicide but he was also a wonderful character actor that appeared in many TV series from the 50s to the 70s. Long live Cyrano Jones!

it's a classic eppy for sure!

It was also a good ep. because it showed Otis' home life.
In the past, one only heard about Otis' home life & wife via Otis (in the sheriff's office).
