That's an excellent question Roseanne. I think the creation of the michel character was a reflection of the French society. A lot of French didn't like the US. I don't think American culture had a big effect on France.

France was in its post Vietnam period having lost at Dien bien phu in 54. In 59 when a bout de souffle was filmed hundreds of thousands of drafted French men were in Algeria.

I can see Godard making up michel as a symbol of the malaise in France.
