A little snippet

I went to see this in Fontainebleau, at the Allied Land Forces in Central Europe camp cinema. I had driven from Paris to see it on the recommendation of a friend.

When in the theatre, there were a couple of Americans behind us, chatting away and I thought, I hope they don't chat through the film but it was OK, from start to finish they were silent.

But at the end of it, they couldn't believe that the heroes all died. We, in the British Army were not under any illusions that war was rosy. But the film, although depressing, was magnificent and truly, the best war film I have ever seen, before or after this film I watched in 1959.

The amazing thing was that the army managed to get a brand new film to show to the squaddies. Maybe they had a reason?
