I saw this before I saw this thread and submitted it to the trivia section. Funny stuff.

Authority is the aqua regia of golden character.

One thing about the film that didn't ring true was the change in Kelley's character at the end of the film, when he suddenly becomes both squeamish and morally concerned about seeing a fair fight.

I didn't find Curley's hange of heart all that unbelieveable, but I think the scriptwriters had to deal with the changes they had made in the story while adapting a long, complex novel into a screenplay. One reviewer at the time said something to the effect that the novel was as "intricate and well-put-together as a good watch" (I'm going by memory), and with that kind of work, if you change or eliminate A, you have to change B, C and D. They dropped the Old Man Clanton-like character of Dad McQuown, who figures in Gannon's showdown with Abe, and also drastically altered the fates of both Abe and Curley. So what Curley did in the movie was one way of filling in the gap.

If you look for them, Kelley played a lot of cowboy roles in the 50's - mid 60's - most of them as the slimy bad guy.
