Tom Drake as a villain?!

With all the great actors in this film, why oh why did they cast former juvenile lead Tom Drake in the main villain role (the Ike Clanton equivalent)? How could anyone be scared of him? Did no one see him in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS and COURAGE OF LASSIE? All Fonda or Quinn or Widmark had to do was turn him around, kick him in the butt and tell him, "There's a trolley car in St. Louis waiting for you...be on it!" and he would have whimpered quietly and run off.

I knew nothing of Mr. Drake's previous career and found him pretty convincing. The thing with his WARLOCK character, Abe McQuown, was not that he himself was a badass, but that he had a lot of dangerous henchmen (especially Cade) and liked to tilt the odds in his favor even further by using backshooters.

I alos thought that Drake looked convincint. The mustache and nasty glare helped.
