Question on the Ending (SPOILER WARNING)

This is mainly an opinion question. Do you think that at the end that Jack Palance wasn't the big hero good guy that he seemed to be and at the same time was Jeff Chandler as bad a villain as one thought?

I know at the end Jeff Chandler tried to kill Palance but he stopped pulling the wire and didn't seem like he could go through with it. Palance had figured out how both working together could deactivate the bomb but after that he was so shook up that he left Chandler to his fate. What do you think?

Actually, Palance grabbed the wire to keep Chandler from pulling the fuse out. You can see him struggling for a good while to hold it. Chandler finally gives up, and comes back down from the safe area to basically commit suicide. When Palance said they could do it by working together, and offered to stay behind, I think he was giving Chandler a chance to redeem himself, morally. When Chandler tried to kill him in a sneaky way buy pulling the wire, instead of going to get the tools, Palance realized he was irredeemable, and left him to his fate. Chandler had put up a swaggering, macho front to everyone around him, especially Palance, and himself. He couldn't live with the fact that Palance, and now, beyond any possible doubt, he himself, knew he was a true coward. Instead, he chose a "heroic" death. That is why he came back and just let Palance walk away, while saying something along the lines of "I guess it is still my bomb." He and Palance knew death was his only way out. Chandler was too much of a coward to face being a coward.

Great little movie. I really enjoyed it.
