These actors are supposed to be teenagers?

I don't think so.

That alone made it difficult to get into. Earnest Borgnine just died yesterday so I don't want to dis him but him playing an Austrailian teenager?? This was one role I don't think he pulled off. LOL

You're half right.

Ray Lawler wrote three plays and indeed, the time span of the plays started from when they were in their 20s/early 30s during one Summer, through to when they were in late middle age (late 40s-early 50s), 17 years later ('the 17th Doll'). That was the point of the play and the movie -- they couldn't continue in this fantasy-like life after Roo loses his job as a cane cutter and Olive wishes to get married.

So in fact he's not "half right"; they're not supposed to be teenagers so he's all wrong.

roo was giving up his job as a canecutter after 15 years, so he would not have been portraying a teenager. In the Ray Lawler play the premise was that Barney and Roo had been meeting up with Olive and another woman in the cane cutting off season for 16 years, this was the seventeenth, thus the original title "summer of the Seventeenth Doll".
